The facts about broadband access

It is fair to say that almost 100% of corporate businesses have broadband Internet access today. Nationally one third of UK Small Medium Enterprises (SME's) has broadband access and a further 20% are about to, according to Government statistics. Here in the South these figures are even higher. See www.broadbanduk.org - the website of the BSG (The Broadband Stakeholder Group is Government's key advisory group on Broadband) for the latest information on UK broadband adoption.

As far as consumers are concerned, Broadband services are available to 99% of the population in urban areas and 84 per cent in suburban areas. As the availability and uptake of Broadband Internet connections continues to accelerate, the opportunities for forward thinking companies are huge.

So why use an online presence for your business?

An online presence is a terminology for having your company presented on the internet. This can be as simple as a single web page, through to an entire business model such as companies like First Direct, EGG, Amazon etc. The balance is down to your specific business model however the benefits can be tremendous.

Several years ago the banking community calculated the average cost of banking in the branch was in the region of £10 per transaction, they introduced Telephone Banking to offer more flexible services for its' customers and get ahead of their competition. The next evolution was “Online” banking, again taking commerce to the next step and significantly reducing cost to only pennies per transaction.

This model now paves the way for many innovative ideas, to reach customers in new engaging ways and ultimately enable news ways to run businesses. This is why the Government strive so hard to get both homes and business across the country onto Broadband, a terminology for High Speed Internet Access.

In summary, with Broadband being available to most homes, forward thinking companies can tap into this as a significant business opportunity. They can contribute to the UK economy by reducing their costs, making it easier to attract new customers and generating increased revenues.
